Installing Chinese voice synthesis in Windows

A frequently asked question on this blog is: how to install Chinese voice in Windows? Voice synthesis is a great enhancement to Pablo and Pingrid.

SOLUTION 1: Use free speech engine Ekho

Download the installer from http://sourceforge.net/projects/e-guidedog/files/latest/download
or go to Ekho's home page http://www.eguidedog.net/ekho.php (look for the paragraph: "here are some recommended versions".)
Download the file suited for your system and open it to install the package.

Then go to Windows Control Panel and click on the Speech icon. Change the Voice Selection from default to the newly installed one.
Click on the Audio Output button and check that the voice is directed to the correct audio driver or sound card.

SOLUTION 2: Use Microsoft Chinese voice

Quality is not as good as Ekho but is is free as well. Here are some step-by-step instructions, reposted from a comment by Benjamin Lim on this blog (thanks, Benjamin).

Follow the Lingoes link http://www.lingoes.net/en/translator/speech.htm
(Lingoes is a very good freeware translation tool).

At the Lingoes webpage look for the following paragraph:
Recommended Excellent TTS Engine
Microsoft Simplified Chinese Voice
PackageFile Size: 1.55 MB
Download: Mirror 1, Mirror 2

Download and it will appear as "Microsoft_TTS_51_chs.msi". Double click on the msi file once it is downloaded

Go to Windows Control Panel and click on the Speech icon. Change the Voice Selection from default to the newly installed one. In my case Microsoft Simplified Chinese. Then click on the Audio Output button and check that the voice is directed to the correct audio driver or sound card.

SOLUTION 3: Commercial voices

Other high-quality voices exist. As far as I know, all of them require buying.

Hi guys,
I discovered how to install Microsoft Lila TTS that is better than Microsoft Chinese Simplified on Windows 7 Ultimate 32/64 and Windows server 2008 R2 32/64 bit.

For windows 7 go on
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/08/29/download-windows-7-mui-language-packs-official-32-bit-and-64-bit-direct-download-links/

for windows server 2008 go on
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=zh-cn&FamilyID=03831393-eef7-48a5-a69f-0ce72b883df2

after that launch from start run this command:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Speech\SpeechUX\sapi.cpl

and select Lila
if pingrid still use the old Microsoft Chinese Simplified TTS delete it from control panel.

PINGRID IS MARVELLOUS! hope in future will train also 2+ words compound and ported on Iphone for free!

I just did as that comment told. But, after running those .exe and .msi several times, no any language could be found on Speech->text-to-voice->language, nut the "Microsoft Ann English US".
The .EXE files are:
64-bit (x64) Windows 7 RTM MUI Language Packs Chinese simplified;traditional;32-bit simplified;traditional, and Microsoft_TTS_51_chs.
My system is Windows 7 Home Premium. And a brand new Toshiba R935.
Could any one help me to solve this problem, please?

Many thanks for your useful tips. Nontheless, I find anothe problem, that is when I make a selection of a non chinese work, and it will also read it plus spell the entire word/sentence, which is very anonoying. How can I avoid this problem without turning off the speech option or turning off the volume?
